Ladies’ title role
Cliftonville Ladies were presented with the Sports Direct Women’s Premiership trophy after bringing the curtain down on a glorious League campaign at Solitude this evening.
Mathematically assured of the title a fortnight before today’s concluding fixture with Glentoran Women, the Reds wrapped things up in style with Teegan Lynch setting them on their way before Caitlin McGuinness’ hat-trick completed an impressive 4-1 victory over the side they will meet in this month’s Women’s Irish Cup Final.
The win ensured that Brendan Lynch’s team ultimately finished nine points clear of the Glens at the top of the table at the end of a campaign that saw them win 15 of their 17 Premiership matches, dropping just five points on their way to a third title in five seasons, although it’s worth noting that one of the games they failed to win – a 1-1 draw with Linfield Women at Midgley Park – came after they had already sealed the crown.
With 73 goals scored and just 13 conceded, Cliftonville had both the most formidable attack and meanest defence in the League, further underlining their status as thoroughly deserved Champions.
They will, of course, bid to add further silverware to the trophy cabinet when they go on the hunt for another treble in three weeks’ time.
With the Boyle Sports Women’s Cup already in the bag prior to tonight’s title party, the Reds are targeting a third straight Irish Cup success when they lock horns with Glentoran at the Clearer Twist Stadium on Saturday, October 24.
Cliftonville supporters will be seated in sections G-K of the South Stand and, with tickets available at just £7.50 for Adults and £5 for Concessions, we’d love to have a big crowd there to roar the team on.
Please note that all Child tickets must be purchased in conjunction with either an Adult or Senior ticket, while accessible tickets can be secured by emailing dao@irishfa.com.
