Devine’s intervention

Linfield Women 2-3 Cliftonville Ladies

Carla Devine was the late hero as Cliftonville Ladies overcame Linfield Women to seize control of VBet League Cup Group A at Midgley Park this evening.

Twice ahead in the game, the Reds were pegged back on both occasions before substitute Devine sealed all three points in the closing minutes of a game that included a dramatic penalty miss by the hosts.

Fi Morgan got things started with a seventh minute opener only for Linfield to be awarded the first of two spot kicks shortly afterwards; Cora Chambers striking the post from 12 yards.

Within a minute, however, the Blues earned another penalty and this time Chambers made no mistake in levelling matters.

Cliftonville were back in front just before half-time courtesy of an own goal from Ellen Hampton only for Chambers to again restore parity on the hour mark.

The winning goal arrived nine minutes from time when a Kirsty McGuinness shot was parried by the keeper and the alert Devine reacted quickest to find the net.
