Final countdown: Maxwell

Having been involved in every possible domestic fixture this season, Danielle Maxwell says Cliftonville Ladies are really to deliver one last big display in this evening’s Electric Ireland Women’s Challenge Cup Final.

As well as lifting the County Antrim Cup and League Cup, the Reds also reached the Final of the Avenir Sports All-Island Cup as well as finishing runners-up to the Glens in the Sports Direct Women’s Premiership.

Indeed, the only competition where John McGrady’s side did not participate in every conceiveable match was in the Women’s Champions League – but, such was the standard of their opposition, perhaps that’s an understanable outlier.

“It has been a very tough but rewarding season,” says Maxwell.

“We have been involved in every game possible for domestic Cup and All-Ireland games, however we have two trophies so far and having the opportunity to add another is a massive achievement for us.

“For us knowing we have one game left and it being the biggest game of the season, we’ll have the same mentality as we’ve had for any others.”

Today’s clash represents Cliftonville’s fourth meeting of the campaign with the Glens and Maxwell feels that familiarity will lend itself to another competitive showdown.

“Both teams know each other very well on and off the pitch,” she adds, “so we can expect a very challenging and high intensity game.”
