McGrady hails support act

John McGrady has called on the Red Army to pump up the volume when Cliftonville Ladies go in search of silverware this weekend.

The Sports Direct Women’s Premiership Champions take on Galway United in the Avenir Sports All-Island Cup Final on Sunday and, with fans making arrangements to travel to the Sligo Showgrounds, McGrady has voiced his gratitude on behalf of the team.

“The girls have appreciated all the support they’ve received in all their big games over the last couple of years,” he explains.

“It definitely helps give them an extra edge and it could help make the difference on Sunday.”

Though his players have plenty of big match experience under their belts, McGrady insists it will count for nothing unless Galway are given the respect they’re due.

“When the game starts, it’s another game and players instincts take over and they play the game in front of them,” he says.

“That’s important for us as we all approach each game as they come – the team in front of us and the challenge they present, that’s it.

“This will be a tough one. We’ve seen some of their other All-Island Cup games they are a good footballing team who have a physical side to their game, too. We know it’s a tough challenge.”

Cliftonville’s preparations have been somewhat hampered by the absence of so many players on international duty with Northern Ireland but McGrady believes there could be positives to take from such a situation.

“The mood has been good, a bit quieter with seven players missing, but the mood is good and everyone is looking forward to another good game,” he adds.

“It’s obviously not ideal preparation with seven players being away, but they are also away training every day and should come back mentally fresh.

“The players that have not been away will be fresher too. It will give everyone a new refreshed energy coming back together and we will need to use that.”
