Cliftonville Ladies 4-0 Glentoran Women
Cliftonville Ladies made it four League Cup Final victories in a row with a comprehensive victory over Glentoran Women in this afternoon’s Boyle Sports Women’s Cup decider.
Two goals to the good at half-time thanks to a brace from Caitlin McGuinness, the Reds extended their advantage courtesy of her elder sister Kirsty before substitute Daniel Maxwell put the seal on a sensational display at Seaview.
The deadlock was almost broken after just two minutes when Kirsty McGuinness’ corner clipped the crossbar before Abbie Magee was denied by Glens goalkeeper Ashleigh McKinnon.
Vicky Carleton then sent an attempt wide before Cliftonville’s strong start was rewarded with the breakthrough goal when Caitlin McGuinness seized on Maddy Harvey-Clifford’s long ball forward and held off Jess Foy to rifle home with 20 minutes on the clock.
Soon later, it was 2-0; McGuinness being picked out down the left by Hannah Doherty before cutting inside and picking her spot with a strike from the edge of the box.
She almost had her hat-trick only for McKinnon to grasp a dangerous Kelsie Burrows delivery, with the keeper making a fine save from the Reds’ goal hero early in the second-half.
The third goal arrived with just over 20 minutes left to play when substitute Maxwell found Kirsty McGuinness in acres of space on the left and she drilled a left-footed drive into the bottom corner.
The same player was then denied by McKinnon before Maxwell wrapped things up eight minutes from time when she finished off a quick one-two with fellow sub Louise McDaniel – putting beyond any doubt whatsoever that the trophy would be extending its residence at Solitude.
