French connection

Three days on from cliftonvillefc.net acknowledging the 46th anniversary of the Club’s first ever away match in European competition, footage from the fixture has coincidentally been unearthed from the archives.

On Friday, our EU Reds series was brought to a close with reflections on the second leg of the Reds’ Cup Winners’ Cup first round second leg clash with Nantes Atlantique back in October 1979 while, serendipitously, the World Sports Archives account on YouTube yesterday uploaded an 88 second video from the game at Stade Marcel Saupin – which was, remarkably, sufficient time to include every goal!

Despite capturing a heavy defeat, the action below is a nevertheless rare treat for fans of a certain vintage to roll back the years and see some legendary Reds figures in their pomp, just five months on from the team’s iconic Irish Cup Final victory over Portadown at Windsor Park.
