Fourmidable fightback!
Cliftonville Ladies lifted the VBet Women’s League Cup for the third year in a row after a stunning comeback from 2-0 down against Glentoran Women in this afternoon’s Final at Seaview.
Behind after just four minutes when Emily Wilson stroked the Glens in front, the Reds’ task was heightened when Wilson claimed her second of the day before half-time.
Cliftonville regrouped at the interval, however, and began their fightback when Caitlin McGuinness reduced the arrears three minutes after the interval.
McGuinness’ 62nd minute header from a Naomi McLaughlin corner levelled matters and the turnaround was complete when Marissa Callaghan nodded home six minutes from time.
Following Kascie Weir’s red card for an off-the-ball incident with Reds defender Fi Morgan, the Cup holders ensured they would keep hold of the silverware when, deep into injury-time, McLaughlin broke clear and squared for substitute Carla Devine to start the latest trophy party.
