Caitlin’s still a treble maker

Cliftonville Ladies 6-0 Derry City Women

Caitlin McGuinness started the new season just like she finished the old one, with a dazzling hat-trick to help Cliftonville Ladies roar to victory.

A few months on from bagging the Irish Cup Final treble that secured a triple trophy haul, McGuinness took just 25 minutes to open het account against Derry City Women at Solitude this evening; converting from a Marissa Callaghan cross.

The duo reversed roles when McGuinness supplied the assist from which Callaghan doubled the Reds’ lead just past the half-hour mark, while the second-half began with Callaghan converting a penalty following a handling offence by a Candystripes defender.

On 53 minutes, Katie Markey showed great composure to extend Cliftonville’s advantage to 4-0 ahead of Kirsty McGuinness teeing younger sister Caitlin up for another in the closing stages.

There was still time, however, for the striker to claim her latest matchball when she pounced deep into injury-time to complete the night’s scoring as Cliftonville assumed early control of Group A in the VBet League Cup.
