Seeing double
With 145 years of history to record, it’s no surprise when Cliftonville’s Heritage Development Officer Paul Treanor happens upon a previously undocumented artefact for the archives.
That’s why he was delighted to recently receive the accompanying framed picture of the Reds’ double-winners from the 1896/97 season from a Mrs Alice McKenna of north Belfast.
The team in the image beat Sherwood Foresters 3-1 in the Irish Cup Final at Grosvenor Park before overcoming Distillery 6-2 in the Charity Cup decider – when Cliftonville were 4-0 up after just eight minutes!
The silverware collected represented the first of Head Trainer Hugh McAteer’s 16 trophies with the Club and, on behalf of Paul and Cliftonville FC in general, our sincere thanks are extended to Mrs McKenna for this very welcome addition to the Club’s historic picture gallery.
