Guinns blazing

Cliftonville Football Club are delighted to announce that Stephen McGuinness has signed a new contract.

The 20-year-old defender, who made his senior debut in a County Antrim Shield tie with Dundela in October 2020, has put pen to paper after impressing Jim Magilton during pre-season.

“I think anybody who’s seen us play will have seen how well Stephen has done,” explained the Manager.

“He’s played in every game and done very well for us. It’s important for players to know that they’re appreciated and they’ll get their chances, and I’m very pleased to see Stephen extend his stay with us.”

McGuinness, who has undertaken loan spells at both Queen’s University and Annagh United in recent seasons, is one of four Academy graduates in a senior squad which also boasts Odhrán Casey, Jack Berry and Shea Kearney.

Fellow youngster Donal Rocks is currently on loan at Ballymena United, while Ballyclare Comrades are handing valuable game time to Michael Morgan – who marked his debut with a goal against Bangor today – and Declan Breen, with Magilton keen to see such up-and-coming talents develop.

“It’s vital for youngsters to get minutes under their belts and we’re always keeping an eye on them,” added Magilton.

“There are a lot of good young players at this Club and Stephen McGuinness is one who has shown what he can do. The new contract is a big reward for how he’s gone about things and what he’s brought to the team throughout pre-season.”
