Encouraging Sions

Cliftonville Ladies produced an admirable display despite defeat in a thrilling Danske Bank Women’s Premiership contest with table-topping Sion Swifts Ladies at Solitude tonight.

The first of the game’s 10 goals came in the first minute and the visitors would double their advantage ahead of Claire Rooney pulling one back for the Reds.

After Toni Finnegan went close with a free-kick, Sion restored their two-goal advantage only for Cliftonville to pull another one back just before the interval.

Unfortunately for Seamus McCorry’s side, having lost the first-half 3-2, the second period would follow a similar pattern as the Swifts raced into a 5-2 lead after Megan Moran was sent off for a foul on Kirsty McGuinness.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, the Reds pulled one back from the penalty spot through Marissa Callaghan (pictured), who soon registered her second of the night to reduce the margin to 5-4 and set up a granstand finale, during which Sion added a sixth to wrap up the points at the end of a superbly entertaining battle.
