Goal plated history

Not only did yesterday’s 1-0 victory over Larne make it back-to-back victories for Cliftonville in the Danske Bank Premiership, it also helped the Reds take the edge in a peculiar goalscoring statistic in the fixture’s long history.

Indeed, today marks 96 years since the sides first locked horns – a 1-1 draw at Inver Park – with this weekend’s encounter being the first competitive meeting between the teams since another 1-1 draw way back on November 3, 2007, when Kieran O’Connor’s opener for Cliftonville was cancelled out by Anto Lagan.

In total, the Reds have tackled Larne on 171 occasions and, thanks to Ryan Curran’s late strike, have registered 70 wins compared to the east Antrim outfit’s 66 and are now ahead on goals scored, with both sides having entered yesterday’s clash with 270 apiece.
