Abbey days

Huge congratulations to Cliftonville’s Under 10s, who emerged victorious from today’s 18th Newtownabbey tournament in Monkstown – lifting the Cup for the third year in a row.

Drawn in a very tough group alongside Glentoran, Larne, Carryduff and Phoenix, the Wee Reds – who were playing up an age-group – won two and drew one of their four games to finish joint-top of the table with seven points to their name, eventually progressing to the decider courtesy of a penalty shoot-out decider.

That set up a Final showdown with hosts 18th Newtownabbey when, thanks to some fine goalkeeping from both sides, spot-kicks were once again required – and, again, Cliftonville converted each one to secure victory and claim the trophy.

As well as hailing the players for retaining the Cup after a series of fine displays, all at Cliftonville Football Club likewise extend credit to dedicated coach Maggie O’Hanlon for her considerable efforts and offer our congratulations to the teams’ parents on what is a proud day for them and their families.
