Eu Reds: Auda
A week on from Cliftonville’s controversial European exit at the hands of St Joseph’s, our mini series of continental anniversaries steps back exactly one year to another disappointing night at Solitude.
For it was 12 months ago today that Latvian outfit Auda emerged from north Belfast with a 2-1 lead from the first leg of the sides’ UEFA Conference League second qualifying round joust.
After Cliftonville had gone close through Ruaidhri Donnelly, Abiodun Ogunniyi punished hesitant defending from a corner kick to open the scoring before Luke Conlan followed in the footsteps of Kieran O’Connor and Ronan Hale by bagging a European goal on his debut when he levelled matters before half-time.
A fine save from visiting goalkeeper Krisjanis Zviedris prevented Jonny Addis from rifling the hosts in front from distance, but it was Abdulrahman Taiwo who had the night’s final say when he raced clear to restore the advantage for Auda, who survived a late scare when Shaun Leppard came close to joining Conlan as a goalscoring debutant.
Cliftonville: Odumosu, Pepper, Stewart, Addis, Newberry, Kearney, Curran, Donnelly, Conlan, Gordon, Doherty. Subs: Breen, Leppard (for Stewart), Jordan, Gormley (for Donnelly), McGuinness, Berry, Wylie (for Gordon), Corrigan (for Curran), Sheridan.
