This evening’s BetMcLean Cup quarter-final represents just the 11th competitive meeting between Cliftonville and Armagh City.
The sides first locked horns in a Promotion/Relegation Play-Off in May 2004, when a 3-0 win put the Reds in firm control ahead of the second leg finishing 1-1 – the only time Cliftonville have failed to get the better of the Eagles in those 10 prior clashes.
The teams’ most recent encounter came in January 2008, when an injury-time penalty from David McAlinden earned the Reds a 1-0 win at Holm Park.
Perhaps ominously, Cliftonville have won every match they’ve ever played at City’s home ground, with our overall record against the Playr-Fit Championship side standing at nine wins and a draw, with 26 goals scored and five conceded.
While the Reds have overcome Limavady United and Bangor to reach the last eight of the competition, Armagh – who are managed by former Cliftonville striker Shea Campbell – have two Premiership scalps to their name, having hit back from 2-0 down to eliminate Loughgall in the second round before enjoying penalty shootout success against Glenavon last month.
