Bres your luck
Marc Smyth wants his Cliftonville Strollers side to be inspired by Tommy Breslin’s philosophy when they go about making history at Solitude this evening.
The Wee Reds trail 1-0 at the halfway stage of their UEFA Youth League first round tie with Daugavpils but, having seen the team produce an impressive display in Riga last time out, Smyth – who won two Premiership titles under Breslin’s tutelage – has backed his players to rise to the occasion in this second leg.
“Our first meeting with Daugavpils in Latvia a fortnight ago was an excellent game of football between two great youth sides,” he explains.
“This will be an amazing experience for these young players and their families, they must enjoy and embrace the occasion and we believe this could be a memorable occasion at Solitude.
“We will ask one thing of our players tonight before they go on to the pitch. In the words of the great Tommy Breslin, go out and express yourselves and entertain everyone.”
You can read all of Smyth’s pre-match views in this evening’s special commemorative edition of our Matchday Magazine, The Red Eye, which has been kindly sponsored by Paul Treanor and Peter Sammut, and which will be on sale for just £1.
