A charitable first

Larne 2-1 Cliftonville

Cliftonville suffered their first ever Charity Shield defeat as Larne came from behind to win this evening’s encounter at Inver Park.

Ahead when Ben Wylie teed Ryan Corrigan up to exact maximum punishment for a wayward pass from goalkeeper Rohan Ferguson on 20 minutes, the Reds were pegged back when Lee Bonis slotted home early in the second-half.

Andy Ryan’s header put the hosts 2-1 up just past the hour mark and, after Levi Ives had nodded against a post, a youthful Reds side – which welcomed Ryan Curran back from injury after 14 months on the sidelines – almost forced a penalty shootout at the finish only for Larne sub Oisin Devlin to clear Reece Jordan’s low drive off the line.

Cliftonville: Odumosu, Pepper, Stewart (Jordan), Addis, Newberry, Kearney, Rory Hale (Curran), Conlan, Doherty (McGuinness), Wylie (Gordon), Corrigan (Sheridan). Unused subs: Breen, Hawthorne.
