Final countdown: Morgan

Fi Morgan says the context of Cliftonville Ladies’ season cannot be assessed until after Saturday night’s Electric Ireland Women’s Challenge Cup Final.

Though they were dethroned as Champions by weekend opponents Glentoran Women, the Reds have enjoyed a hugely positive campaign that saw the team compete in Europe for the first time, reach the inaugural All-Island Cup Final and lift both the County Antrim Cup and Premiership League Cup – but Morgan insists now is not the time for looking back fondly.

“Missing out on winning the title was a really hard one to take, though coming second we know just isn’t good enough,” she insists.

“We’ll brush it off and reflect on all the highs and lows when the season and matches are all over. We still have a Cup Final to win, so we aren’t thinking about it all – our heads as a collective are on the Cup Final.”

Saturday night’s contest at Windsor Park represents the sides’ fourth meeting in this campaign and, though Cliftonville enjoyed a comprehensive triumph in a League Cup clash, they were twice forced to settle for a point having taken the lead in both Premiership showdowns.

“Glentoran are a good side and will be well up for the match, but so will we,” adds Morgan.

“During the season, they haven’t beaten us so we will be going into the match with a lot of confidence as a group. It’s a Cup Final at the end of the day, so anyone can take it home.”
