Finne margins

Toni-Leigh Finnegan says Cliftonville Ladies will be looking for improvement when they tackle Derry City Women this evening.

The Sports Direct Women’s Premiership Champions commenced their campaign with a 3-0 victory over Linfield on Sunday, but Finnegan believes that she and her team-mates have further gears to climb.

“We played well as it was the first game of the season,” she says.

“I think there were a lot of positives to take from the game but there’s also some areas that we need to improve on as a team going forward. I think we could have been more clinical in the final third but that’s something that will automatically improve within the next few games as we get going again and get more minutes together.”

The Candystripes’ season began with a chastening 11-0 loss at the hands of Glentoran Women and, while naturally wary of a reaction to that, Finnegan is confident the Reds can maintain a winning start.

“We’re looking forward to getting down to the Brandywell and hopefully finishing more chances than we did on Sunday,” she adds.

“We know Derry are getting stronger each year and we approach each team with the same attitude. We don’t get complacent against anyone and we’re looking forward to hopefully getting the three points.”
