We’re of won mind: McGrady
John McGrady believes Cliftonville Ladies have the mentality to approach this evening’s North Belfast Derby fully focused on the task at hand.
The Reds make the short journey to Seaview to face Crusaders Strikers knowing that victory will see them crowned Danske Bank Women’s Premiership Champions for the first time in history and McGrady has backed his players to keep cool heads as they set about their mission.
“It’s been our habit all season – the next game’s the biggest,” he asserts.
“That’s how it always is, the next one is always the biggest one as it’s the only game we can affect. We have sent that consistent message all season; it’s always about the next three points and that’s what tonight is – an opportunity to work hard and earn three points against a strong Crusaders team.
“They are a good side and a competitive team. Every game is tough at Seaview. It’s a North Belfast Derby and we wouldn’t expect anything less.”
No Club had more players in Northern Ireland’s squad at this summer’s European Championships than Cliftonville and, while he believes the experience of such high-profile occasions can benefit those stars tonight, McGrady is equally confident that the rest of his panel are primed to perform.
“Obviously having so many represent the Club at the Euros will have given those players an experience like no other and something they can draw upon at different times,” he adds.
“We also have players that didn’t play at the Euros but have played international football; we have players who have played in big Cup Finals and even underage internationals too, all of these are experiences they can draw on in different scenarios. There is no pressure on the girls, it’s a privilege to be competing for trophies and one that should be enjoyed in football.”
