Saturday night live

Marissa Callaghan says hosting a vital Danske Bank Women’s Premiership match under Solitude’s Saturday night lights is an “exciting” prospect for Cliftonville Ladies.

The Reds, who lead defending Champions Glentoran Women by a point at the top of the table, play their game in hand against Sion Swifts Ladies this evening (7.45pm) and, while expecting a typically testing encounter, Callaghan is hopeful that a boost in attendance numbers can help roar the team over the line with less than a fortnight of the campaign remaining.

“From the beginning of our season, we have always focused one game at a time,” she explains.

“After each match day, our focus that week is always on the next. Our coaching staff work relentlessly to make sure we are prepared for every game and the girls are fully committed.

“Sion Swifts are always a tough opponent. They have talent throughout the team with a blend of youth and experience. They work tirelessly on and off the ball and we are expecting a tough, physical game.

“It’s exciting having a Saturday night match under the lights at home. I hope our fans come out in numbers, it would be amazing to have some of the Red Army there to support us.”
