Wins of change

Grace McKimm says Cliftonville Ladies’ confidence has surged in the wake of some vital results despite the absences of key performers.

The Reds had a host of international players on the sidelines when they overcame Glentoran Women 3-0 a fortnight ago and also had to contend without crucial figures in last week’s defeat of Linfield Ladies, which should stand them in good stead for this evening’s League Cup quarter-final encounter with the Glens.

With both teams’ international stars ineligible for the game, Cliftonville – who will also be without long-term injury victim Shona Davis and a couple of other recognised figures – will be much-changed for the trip to Ashfield, but McKimm insists nobody is perturbed about the task that lies in store.

“There’s confidence in the squad which really helps in times where key players are either unavailable or not allowed to take part in certain Cup competitions,” she explains. “But every match boosts everyone’s confidence bit by bit.

“This week will be challenging since there’s possibly nine international players missing and another few injuries but as long as we all prepare mentally and physically, there’s nothing stopping us from coming out on top against Glentoran. It all depends on our performances individually and collectively.”
