Six sense

Cliftonville Ladies 6-0 Derry City Women

Cliftonville Ladies hit marked their homecoming in style by hitting six goals without reply against Derry City Women this evening.

Danielle Maxwell (pictured) opened the scoring with her first strike for the Club, with Toni-Leigh Finnegan doubling the Reds’ advantage ahead of both Marissa Callaghan and Caitlin McGuinness bagging braces to ensure two wins from two at the start of the new Danske Bank Women’s Premiership season.

Callaghan, Erin Montgomery and Maxwell all went close in the opening five minutes before the deadlock was broken when Maxwell looped an effort over goalkeeper Clare Friel.

Maxwell then had a corner kick cleared off the line ahead of Finnegan making it 2-0 when she headed Grace McKimm’s corner delivery home from close range – and Callaghan added a third just a minute later.

Finnegan, Montgomery, Louise McDaniel, Maxwell and McGuinness all threatened to add to Cliftonville’s tally before the break, but the fourth goal arrived 12 minutes after the interval when McGuinness raced through to poke past the keeper.

Callaghan converted a Maxwell cross for 5-0 on the hour and, after Fi Morgan, Finnegan and Kelsie Burrows went close, McGuinness completed the scoring with a simple finish thanks to some good work from Tara Reilly.
