Liam to please

Cliftonville’s Liam McStravick was among the goals as Northern Ireland Under-18 Schoolboys claimed a 3-0 victory over Wales in last night’s Centenary Shield clash at the Blanchflower Stadium.

Captained by Reds defender Aiden Kelly, Frankie Wilson’s side took the lead through Jack McFeely before McStravick (pictured) made it 2-0 with a fine lob of Ifan Knott.

A foul on Kelly then earned the hosts a penalty but Aaron Wightman saw his kick saved by the keeper, who was eventually beaten again when Donal Scullion completed the scoring in injury-time.

The win kick-started Northern Ireland’s defence of the trophy following last week’s 3-2 reverse against Scotland in Renfrewshire – where McStravick and Kelly also featured – and they return to action with ties against England and the Republic of Ireland later in the month.

Cliftonville Ladies defender Cerys Madden was, meanwhile, an unused substitute in Northern Ireland Under-17s’ 2-1 defeat of Luxembourg in yesterday’s European Women’s Under-17 Championship qualifier in Israel, where the team will also meet the Faroe Islands (Sunday) and the host nation (Wednesday).
