Next Port of call

Cliftonville’s pre-season programme continues with tomorrow’s trip to face Portstewart.

The NIFL Premier Intermediate League side were, of course, our opponents in the first round of last season’s Irish Cup and, having originally been drawn away from home for that game prior to its switch to Solitude, we look forward to making an overdue return to Mullaghacall, where kick-off is set for 2pm.

The Reds’ last visit to the North Coast venue was just over 16 years ago when, on July 13, 2005, goals from Gary Kennedy (2), Conor Downey, Liam Fleming and Mark Holland secured a 5-0 friendly victory.

Five years earlier, a Chris Scannell double earned a 2-0 win during preparations for the 2000/01 season, while the Clubs’ only previous meeting had come just a few months before that; Scannell joining Peter Murray on the scoresheet after an Aaron Forgrave own goal had set Cliftonville on course for a 3-0 Irish Cup fifth round success at Solitude.

Back in April of this year, meanwhile, Garry Breen, Daire O’Connor (2), Daniel Kearns and Ryan Curran netted as the Reds overcame the Seahawks in the same competition.

Cliftonville fans are, in addition, notified of a change to the Club’s forthcoming friendly programme, with the home tie against Derry City – originally scheduled for next Saturday, August 7 – now rearranged for Monday, August 9 with a 7.30pm kick-off at Solitude.
