Eu Reds: Barry Town United

Continuing our mini-series of European anniversaries in the countdown to Cliftonville’s return to action, we’re turning the clock back two years to a record-breaking night at Solitude.

For it was on this day in 2019 that the Reds registered the Club’s biggest ever win in continental competition when Barry Town United were beaten 4-0 in the second leg of the sides’ Europa League Preliminary Round tie.

Following a goalless encounter in Cardiff the previous week, Cliftonville – roared on by a crowd so big that many had to be accommodated alongside visiting fans in the Bowling Green Stand – took the lead when Conor McMenamin nodded home from a first-half corner.

A blistering Joe Gormley drive made it 2-0 before the break and, now firmly in control, the hosts added to their tally after the interval when Conor McDermott marked his home debut with a well-taken finish ahead of Ruaidhri Donnelly completing the scoring.
