To the nines

Cliftonville’s 7-2 victory over Dundela in last night’s County Antrim Shield quarter-final tie represents a new high score in the fixture’s history – but was not the first time Joe Gormley had plundered a hat-trick against the Wilgar Park outfit.

His four finishes alongside a double from Chris Curran and a birthday strike for Ryan Curran, plus responses from Owain Beggs and Daniel Burns, contributed to a nine goal return that usurped the eight shared in a 4-4 draw back in 1963, with this most recent meeting extending the Reds’ record to six wins from 12 attempts.

Though the Duns have not tasted victory against Cliftonville for some 35 years, they did enjoy something of an early strangehold over the Club with just one loss in the sides’ first seven clashes.

The teams first met on Irish Cup duty in 1955 – the Duns winning 1-0 en route to lifting the trophy – while the County Antrim Shield would pit them together in 1963. Following that aforementioned 4-4 draw, a replay finished 1-1 before the east Belfast men trumphed 2-0 in a second replay at Seaview.

Cliftonville’s first win against Dundela also came in the Shield; Kevin McGarry’s side succeeding 2-1 in 1973, but the Duns would emerge on top next time round when they banked a 1-0 win in the same competition in 1985 ahead of a goalless draw in the Ulster Cup two years later.

Since then, however, it’s been five wins from five for the Reds.

Goals from Peter Murray and Sean O’Kane secured Irish Cup progress in January 1991, while Eddie Patterson (2), Jim McFadden and Tim McCann struck in a 4-1 victory at the quarter-final stage of the 1992 League Cup.

In 2013, Joe Gormley hit a hat-trick alongside strikes from Liam Boyce and Chris Curran as Cliftonville sealed a 5-0 win on League Cup duty ahead of a Davy McDaid double ensuring a win in the same tournament two seasons latter on a night perhaps best remembered for Martin Murray’s sublime own goal.
