Joe Gorman knows the standard of Cliftonville’s defending will be crucial to the team’s chances of progress when they face Haugesund.
One week on from registering a European Club record 4-0 victory over Barry Town United, the Reds welcome their Norwegian Eliteserien opponents to Solitude this evening fully aware of the step up in class that the visitors possess – which is why Gorman outlines the significance of defensive cohesion and organisation.
“The longer we go in the competition, the better quality of player we’ll come up against,” he says ahead of this evening’s Europa League First Qualifying Round first leg clash.
“We’ve had two clean sheets in a row in Europe and, as a defender, I’m very happy about that.
“We did the basics well and that’s all you can do as a defender – do the basics well, talk and thankfully we got the clean sheets against Barry. We obviously want to do the same again and we’ll see what lies ahead against Haugesund.
“It will be a tougher game, but we’re looking forward to it.”
You can read the full Gorman interview in tonight’s edition of our Matchday Magazine, which will be on sale at Solitude for £3.
Alongside a review of Haugesund’s European history, The Red Eye’s second issue of the campaign catches up with Conor McMenamin, heralds the return of Red Arnie’s half-time quiz and steps 40, 27 and 21 years back down memory lane – plus plenty more besides.
Our Matchday Magazine has attained a top-three position in the NI Football Programme Collectors’ annual awards poll for the last eight seasons – assuming the runners-up position on six of those occasions – so, if you’re not a regular reader, why not take a look at what you’ve been missing out on?
