Greek tragedy for Olympic ace
Cliftonville’s Peter McKiernan was part of the Northern Ireland side that slipped to a 1-0 defeat by Greece in this afternoon’s Under 17 friendly at Shamrock Park.
Two days after losing 3-1 to the same opposition in Dungannon, Northern Ireland went close to taking a 20th minute lead when McKiernan – an unused sub in Tuesday’s encounter – drew a smart save from visiting goalkeeper Konstantinos Balomenos.
Greek debutant Dimitrios Arsenidis gave his side the lead shortly afterwards, with the hosts’ best chances of levelling coming courtesy of McKiernan who, after delivering a teasing ball into the area that nobody was able to get on the end of, teed Eoin Teggart up for an opportunity that was taken off his toe by a defender.
