On the defensive

Aaron Donnelly insists it’s no coincidence that Cliftonville’s recent winning streak has come along at the same time as a run of clean sheets.

The Reds approach tomorrow’s Danske Bank Premiership clash with Dungannon Swifts on the back of three League victories without shipping a single goal and with the best defensive record in the division this season – statistics which Donnelly says everyone involved is determined to preserve.

“We’ve worked hard in training to try and keep clean sheets and it’s been working for us of late,” says the 19-year-old.

“We’ve kept three clean sheets in our last three League matches and won each of the games. We’ll aim to do it again against Dungannon and keep the run going.”

You can read the full Donnelly interview in this this weekend’s edition of our Matchday Magazine, which will be on sale at Solitude for £3.

Featuring Paddy McLaughlin’s pre-match views, The Red Eye’s 10th issue of the campaign carries your latest player poster, reflects on the Swifts’ up-and-down form and steps 112, 45 and 17 years back down memory lane – plus plenty more besides.

Our Matchday Magazine has attained a top-three position in the NI Football Programme Collectors’ annual awards poll for the last eight seasons – assuming the runners-up position on six of those occasions – so, if you’re not a regular reader, why not take a look at what you’ve been missing out on?
