Form believer

Jim Magilton is a firm advocate of the old cliche about form going out the window on Derby Day and has called on his players to produce a performance befitting of the occasion when Cliftonville host Crusaders at a sold-out Solitude this afternoon.

The sides’ first Sports Direct Premiership meeting of the season sees the Crues seeking to end a five-game losing run, whereas the Reds will bid to claim the victory that would extend their unbeaten streak to nine League outings – statistics that Magilton has absolutely no interest in as he prepares his team for action.

“It’s a wonderful fixture and it’s one to look forward to,” he says.

“Our fans love it, there’ll be a bumper crowd and there’s all to play for. It’s a game that we have to go and try and win. We know how much this game means to our fans and they’re great occasions to be involved in.

“We’ve one or two additional injuries that we need to take care of from last Saturday, but we’ll be up for it and I’m sure Crusaders will be ready for it to and that’s what makes it such a wonderful feast.

“Form does go out the window on days like this. It’s a one-off game – well, everything’s a one-off game – but this in particular is a one-off game and it’s 90 minutes where you have to stand up an be counted.

“It’s always the team that can play with a level of composure and quality that normally win these games – and hopefully that’s us.”
