Role with it: Magilton
Jim Magilton has urged the Red Army to play a “major role” in tomorrow night’s UEFA Conference League decider with St Joseph’s.
Cliftonville approach the second leg of the first qualifying round tie on the back of a 2-2 draw in Gibraltar last week and, with Solitude sold out for the game, Magilton is determined to make the most of the occasion.
“We’ve given ourselves an opportunity but our fans are going to be so important to us,” he says.
“We know what Solitude can be like when our supporters are really up for it.
“St Joseph’s are a good side with some very good players and I believe we’ll have to play better than we did last week if we want to make it through – and with the Red Army behind us, it’s something we’re capable of achieving.”
The Reds were twice in front at Europa Point Stadium with Ryan Curran and Jonny Addis getting their names on the scoresheet, but two Alvaro Rey finishes – the first of which came from the penalty spot in the aftermath of Jack Keaney’s dismissal – ensure the contest remains delicately poised at the halfway stage.
“When you’re away from home in the first leg of any tie, one of the big things you’re looking for is to still be in with a chance when the second game comes around,” adds Magilton.
“Thanks to the application of the players in Gibraltar last week, we’re certainly in with a chance.
“We’ll need to be positive and we’ll need to have belief that we can complete the job. Our fans can play a major role in giving the team that extra shot of confidence that they’ll need.
