Garry on

Shea McGarry was on the scoresheet as Northern Ireland Under-17s brought the curtain down on their European Championship qualifying campaign recently.

The defender was one of four Cliftonville players who featured in yesterday’s 2-1 defeat to Scotland at The Coleraine Showgrounds, where Paul Stanfield and Eamonn Tohill were also in the starting XI, while Alfie Anderson came on as substitute.

Andy Waterworth’s side began their Group A6 mini tournament with a 2-0 loss to Spain last Sunday, when Reds Academy talents McGarry, Stanfield and Tohill were all in the line-up, while Wednesday’s 4-0 reverse at the hands of Turkiye – against whom McGarry, Anderson, Tohill and Stanfield all featured – put paid to their hopes of qualification prior to yesterday’s game.

The early lead Caelan-Kole Cadamarteri gave Scotland was swiftly cancelled out by McGarry, only for the visitors to claim a winner through Luke Douglas five minutes from time – but the result wasn’t enough to book the Scots’ place in this summer’s Finals, which was claimed by Spain (below), who completed their schedule with a goalless draw against Turkiye at Solitude.
