Right as train
Jim Magilton admits Cliftonville have not yet played to their potential this season, but has backed his players to hit top form if they can carry their intensity and application from the training pitch into matchdays.
The Reds boss has been frustrated that what he’s seen during midweek sessions has not always been replicated in weekend action and, ahead of tomorrow’s long-awaited return to Sports Direct Premiership duty against Larne, says it’s important that consistent standards are maintained every time his team cross the white line.
“Since we’ve been in, we’ve always talked about training as you play and playing as you train – that is the mantra in the dressing room,” he explains.
“That is the expectation from all the staff and standards they’ve set. We’ve been nowhere near the standards of how we’re training because we’ve not brought our training into the games.
“As a Manager, it is frustration for me because I know they are miles better than what they have produced.
“We know we have to get a grip of our League position and the only way to do that is to play to the potential that I know exists in our squad. We can’t shy away from where we are but I know we’re so much better than what we’ve shown so far and we’re working to try and get that out of the players on a more regular basis.
“The last two performances in the League were really poor. We know that and we acknowledge that. The only way you’re going to get over that is working hard on the training ground and then try and get results.”
