Glenavon 1-2 Cliftonville
Goals in either half from Joe Gormley and Shea Gordon earned Cliftonville full points from this afternoon’s Sports Direct Premiership encounter with Glenavon at Mourneview Park.
As had been the case in last week’s League opener with Portadown, the Reds endured a nervy finish to proceedings as the hosts went in desperate search of an equaliser but, with goalkeeper David Odumosu relatively untroubled, Cliftonville held on from a second win in as many outings.
The deadlock was broken on 17 minutes when Ryan Curran’s attempt to find space outside the box ended with the ball rolling favourably for Gormley, who lashed home a first time effort from just outside the box.
A good save from Gareth Deane prevented Sean Stewart from doubling the Reds’ lead soon after but the second goal duly came before the hour when Gordon timed his run perfectly to get on the end of Ronan Doherty’s delivery,
In firm control of proceedings, a misplaced pass saw the Reds cough up their first goal of the domestic campaign when James Doona produced a confident finish 19 minutes from time and, though the Lurgan Blues poured forward as the clock ticked down, it was Cliftonville who came closest to scoring when substitute Kris Lowe flicked an effort just over the top.
