Caer crash

Cliftonville 1-2 Caernarfon Town

Cliftonville were unable to complete a second-half comeback in this afternoon’s friendly defeat to Caernarfon Town at Solitude.

The Welsh outfit – who are gearing up for a UEFA Conference League clash with Crusaders next month – stormed into a 2-0 lead at the break courtesy of an eye-catching Darren Thomas finish and a penalty kick from Louis Lloyd.

In between times, Declan Breen had saved a Zack Clarke penalty and the first period ended with Lloyd smashing a free-kick against the post while, in contrast, the Reds’ only real effort of note was a miscued attempt from Ronan Doherty that didn’t cause goalkeeper Hari Thomas any great concern.

The second period was a different story, though, as Cliftonville stepped things up a gear with Ryan Corrigan twice going close in addition to a Rory Hale effort that was hacked off the line and a low drive from Shea Kearney that called Thomas into action.

The Caernarfon goalkeeper made further interventions to keep the Reds at bay until a foul on Rory Hale earned a spot kick that the midfielder stepped up to convert.

Cliftonville, who introduced a raft of young talents from the bench, were unable to turn the control they exerted in the second-half into an equalising goal as Cofis held on for the win.

Cliftonville: Breen (Odumosu), Conlan, Addis, Newberry (Jordan), Kearney, Rory Hale (Berry), Wylie (McCart), Leppard, Gordon (McGuinness), Doherty (Sheridan), Corrigan. Unused sub: Donnelly.
