Jim targets wins of change

Jim Magilton has a simple answer when quizzed on how he can get his players to have as much faith in themselves as he does.

Ahead of this evening’s County Antrim Shield tussle with Carrick Rangers at Loughview Leisure Arena, one of the Reds chief’s biggest observations from his side’s last three games has been stuttering belief levels in key moments.

Despite largely encouraging performances against Linfield, Larne and Glentoran, Magilton’s team have pocketed just a single point in the past fortnight and, asked how best to address the players’ confidence in such high-profile encounters, he asserts: “Win. It’s as simple as that.

“There’s nothing like winning to fuel your belief and that’s what we need to do. The players have been fantastic for me, they’ve worked hard in every game, they’ve played well, they’ve created chances but there have been times when I want them to believe in themselves more.

“I don’t want fear creeping into the squad because I have so much faith in them. I want them to realise how good they are.”

Ahead of his first Cup fixture as Cliftonville Manager, he adds: “We’ve been here nine weeks, we’ve thrown a lot at the players and they’ve responded well. It’s been a busy start to the season and I’m delighted with the recruitment work we’ve been able to do but the hard work really starts now.”
