United for mental health

There was no shortage of iconic figures on display when Solitude hosted the Match for Mental Health on Saturday.

A fundraising fixture organised by Cliftonville’s Official Charity Partner TAMHI, the occasion saw a Manchester United Legends XI take on a host of sides from the TAMHI family – including a North Belfast United team comprising Reds and Crusaders heroes of yesteryear, with the likes of Marty Tabb, George McMullan and Mark O’Neill strutting their stuff on familiar soil.

Though Joe Gormley’s credentials qualified him to play in that team, the striker – fresh from his opening session of pre-season training on Saturday morning – instead lined up alongside such luminaries as Brian McClair, Paul Parker, Jaap Stam, Karel Poborsky, Wes Brown and Sammy McIlroy in a United side bursting with household names from across the generations.

While the day undoubtedly belonged to TAMHI and their ongoing efforts to raise awareness and support for mental health issues across north Belfast and beyond, Cliftonville FC were only too pleased to play our part by playing host to such a memorable occasion.

Congratulations to all involved.
