Trust issues

Cliftonville will face Queen’s Park in the third round of the SPFL Trust Trophy.

This afternoon’s draw paired the Reds with the Scottish Championship side in a tie scheduled to be played at Solitude on the weekend of September 24/25.

The Spiders, who sit third in the current table with 10 points from five fixtures thus far, share some significant history with the Reds, whose founding father John McCredy McAlery invited Queen’s Park to contest the first football match ever staged in Ireland – a 3-2 victory over Caledonians – prior to establishing Cliftonville FC and how fitting it is that next month’s fixture will be played during our anniversary week.

Manager Owen Coyle, meanwhile, has no shortage of links with the Reds and, indeed, was a scorer on his last visit to Solitude when his Bolton Wanderers team enjoyed a 2-0 win in a friendly organised to mark the official opening of our 3G facilities back in 2010.

We look forward to welcoming him and Queen’s Park to Belfast in just under a month’s time for Cliftonville’s first ever engagement in the SPFL Trust Trophy.
