Taking a train check

Paddy McLaughlin admits Cliftonville have had precious little time on the training pitch in the aftermath of Tuesday’s win at Portadown but has backed his players to be good to go when they take on Warrenpoint Town tomorrow.

The Reds booked their place the League Cup semi-finals courtesy of an extra-time victory over the Ports and return to Danske Bank Premiership duty against a Point side that enjoyed considerably more straightforward progress with a comfortable midweek defeat of Limavady United.

“It’s another tough game, you know what this League’s like – they’re all physical battles and all sides bring their own challenges,” said McLaughlin of this weekend’s Milltown match-up.

“Every week is a different game and a different battle, so we’ll dust ourselves down from Tuesday night. We certainly didn’t need that extra half-hour against Portadown with our squad being stretched, it was a lot of work on the legs for the boys so the key thing for us this week has been recovery and getting ready for another tough game. There hasn’t been a lot of training done, it’s all been but the boys have done that all year long, they’ve been brilliant for us and they’ll go again.

“It’s nice to be in two semi-finals because you obviously want to go as far as you can in any competition, but there’s a lot of League games to be played before they come about and getting points on the board is our focus again now.”
