Watching brief

Paul O’Neill admits that his frustration at being kept out by injury was somewhat eased by the entertainment his team-mates served up in his absence.

The striker missed all of Cliftonville’s pre-season friendlies and, following substitute appearances against Harland & Wolff Welders and Dungannon Swifts, marked his first start of the campaign with a hat-trick against Knockbreda in midweek – but reveals mixed emotions when reflecting on his time on the sidelines.

“It’s been hard having to sit back and watch the early games but it’s been brilliant watching it from the stands,” he says.

“The football we’ve been playing is brilliant to watch and it’s a really long season but we have made a good start to it. Hopefully we will just continue to keep building on it and keep scoring goals.”

You can read the full O’Neill interview in tomorrow’s edition of our Matchday Magazine, which will be on sale at Solitude for £3.

Featuring pre-match views from the Manager’s Office, The Red Eye’s sixth issue of the campaign reviews Point’s start to the season and steps 106, 39 and 17 years back down memory lane – plus plenty more besides.

Our Matchday Magazine attained a top-three position in the NI Football Programme Collectors’ last eight annual awards polls – assuming the runners-up position on six of those occasions – so, if you’re not a regular reader, why not take a look at what you’ve been missing out on?
