Har’s breadth

Jamie Harney believes recent exertions in Scotland could help Cliftonville narrow the margins when they host Nordsjælland in the Europa League this evening.

The Danes visit Solitude for a First Qualifying Round first leg tie that the Reds enter on the back of a testing weekend that saw them tackle Shelbourne in Dublin less than 24 hours after a hard-fought encounter with a Celtic XI at the Hoops’ Lennoxtown training facility – an occasion that Harney hopes he and his team-mates can call upon tonight.

“Getting over to Lennoxtown on Saturday was good for us,” says the 22-year-old.

“It was a good experience for us but we were there to do a job. It was very much like Nordsjælland in that they wanted to keep the ball and we used it as a warm-up for Europe. We’ve got our instructions and hopefully we can implement what Barry wants us to do.”

You can read the full Harney interview in this this evening’s edition of our Matchday Magazine, which will be on sale at Solitude for £2.50.

In addition to boss Barry Gray’s pre-match views, The Red Eye’s first issue of the season reflects on Cliftonville’s history in European competition, carries a heartfelt farewell to the late Ron Manley and catches up with the Denmark-based fan who couldn’t believe his luck when UEFA handed his beloved Reds a date in his adopted homeland for the second time in a decade.

Our Matchday Magazine has attained a top-three position in the NI Football Programme Collectors’ annual awards poll for the last seven seasons – assuming the runners-up position on six of those occasions – so, if you’re not a regular reader, why not take a look at what you’ve been missing out on?
