Drommed out

Cliftonville Olympic suffered Intermediate Cup heartbreak when yesterday’s Third Round tie saw Dromara Village triumph on penalties.

After leading 2-0 and 3-1 inside 90 minutes, Brendan Lynch’s side looked to have finally done enough to see off the Amateur League 1A outfit when they look the lead in the closing stages of Extra Time, only for the hosts to level with the last kick of the game before sealing a 7-6 victory in the shoot-out.

Things started well for the young Reds and they pulled in front when Conor Scannell finished off a cross from Peter McKiernan, who added his own name to the scoresheet just past the half-hour.

Though Dromara reduced the arrears on 57 minutes, Scannell (pictured) found the top corner to blast the Olympic 3-1 up.

Two goals in quick succession would, however, draw the Bellsbridge side level and ultimately send the tie into Extra Time, during which Scannell seized on a Calvin McCurry flick-on to complete his hat-trick and seemingly set the Reds on course for Round four.

Dromara thought otherwise, though, and made it 4-4 in the closing seconds to set up the shoot-out from which they would emerge on top.
