Reds pay the penalty

Cliftonville 1-1 Dungannon Swifts [2-3 on penalties]

Cliftonville were eliminated from the League Cup following a penalty shoot-out defeat to Dungannon Swifts in this evening’s Quarter Final tie at Solitude.

Both sides created a number of golden opportunities to win the game inside the regulation 90 minutes but it took until the eighth minute of extra-time before the deadlock was broken when Levi Ives added to his recent repertoire of eye-catching strikes when he found the top corner from distance.

The Swifts hit back, however, with Johnny Lafferty scrambling a late leveller to set up penalties, which his side won 3-2.

After Joe Gormley struck wide with the first kick, Dungannon took control courtesy of strikes from Paul McElroy and Chris Hegarty.

Stephen Garrett saw his effort saved by Niall Morgan before Jay Donnelly reduced the arrears when he converted his effort, only for Jarlath O’Rourke to put the visitors 3-1 up.

Alan Teggart had the opportunity to win it only to be denied by Brian Neeson ahead of Levi Ives netting to make it 3-2 but, when Ryan Catney scaled the crossbar, Cliftonville’s race was run as the Swifts progressed to the last four.

Cliftonville: Neeson, McGovern, Ives, Breen, C Curran, R Donnelly, McDonald, Bagnall, Catney, Gormley, J Donnelly. Subs: Garrett (C Curran, 70 mins), McConnell (McDonald, 101 mins), Lavery, Maguire (R Donnelly, 111 mins), McMenamin, A Donnelly, Casey.
