Learning our stripes

Jim Magilton says that learning lessons from every game is invaluable as Cliftonville bid to return to winning ways when they host Glentoran this evening.

The Reds approach the County Antrim Shield quarter-final tie on the back of a disappointing run of defeats that continued with Saturday’s narrow reverse against Coleraine.

Magilton, however, points to the fine margins that have proved so decisive during a sequence of matches in which his side have struck the woodwork at least once in every fixture – and wants his players to build on the positive aspects of their performances when they lock horns with the Glens.

“It’s the odd goal and it has been the odd goal in the five games,” he explained.

“There’s learnings from every game. There’s a learning from Saturday’s game, we’ll take it on board but then we’ve got to come out all guns blazing on Tuesday night.

“In some games, I’ve been highly critical but I couldn’t criticise the players on Saturday. I thought they showed courage and I thought they showed quality.

“There was enough to be encouraged by on Saturday. We just need to keep working hard and turn the fine margins in our favour.”
