Cliftonville were masters of their own downfall in this evening's County Antrim Shield Quarter Final defeat to Linfield at
Windsor Park.
Though a much-changed team produced a more than competent display, defensive clangers allowed Matthew Clarke
and Ross Gaynor to put the Blues 2-0 up and, after Caoimhin Bonner was harshly sent off for two bookings, Andy
Waterworth netted to complete the hosts' success.
Boss Gerard Lyttle made eight changes to the side that was overcome by Glentoran at the weekend and it was one of
the new additions, Bonner, whose timely block prevented Waterworth from converting Ross Glendinning's cross.
At the other end, Chris Curran saw an attempt charged down by Mark Stafford before the deadlock was broken when
Tomas Cosgrove's hesitation in dealing with a delivery from the left allowed Clarke to pounce.
Davy McDaid headed over the top from Aaron Donnelly's cross as the Reds went in search of a leveller and, after the
interval, Chris Ramsey teed Jay Donnelly up for an attempt that was well fielded by Gareth Deane.
McDaid twice threatened shortly afterwards, sending one strike over the top and another into the side netting, ahead of
Gaynor making it 2-0 when he seized upon Aaron Donnelly's loose pass to stroke the ball past goalkeeper Jason
Mooney.
Bonner, earlier shown a harsh yellow card for attempting to win the ball from a Reds corner, received his marching
orders when referee Ian McNabb ruled that, despite winning the ball in a challenge with Waterworth, the Cliftonville
defender was the worthy recipient of a second booking.
Waterworth would glance a header home to round off the scoring soon later as, despite an encouraging display of
passing football, the visitors bowed out of the Shield for another year.
