Goals in either half from Daniel Hughes and Jason McGuinness earned Cliftonville full points from this afternoon's Danske Bank Premiership encounter with Ards. Though both sides had a number of opportunities during an entertaining first-half, it took 31 minutes for the deadlock to be broken; Hughes finding the bottom corner to put the Reds into a lead that was extended when skipper McGuinness nodded home deep into the second period. Cliftonville's margin of victory might have been greater had Levi Ives been able to convert the opportunity that came his way after just 75 seconds but, teed up by Jay Donnelly, he poked his shot across the face of goal and just wide of the far post. Though Jamie Douglas and Joe McKinney each created openings for the visitors, it was the Reds who would go closest to breaking the deadlock only for Ruairi Harkin's free-kick to whistle just wide. Peter Burke was called into action to make a save from David McAllister before Cliftonville took the lead when Ives' ball into the box was superbly controlled by Jude Winchester, who set Hughes up for a confident strike beyond the despairing dive of goalkeeper Aaron Hogg. Hughes had two chances to extend the hosts' advantage before the interval but, unable to react in time to steer David McCullough's wayward clearance goalward, he was just off target when Jay Donnelly's delivery cut the Ards defence open. The second goal did eventually arrive with 17 minutes to play when Harkin's corner kick was met by McGuinness, who had the simple task of heading into the net after Hogg had misjudged the trajectory of the ball. Emmet Friars should have done better than head over the top when unmarked shortly afterwards but Ards' best chance of getting back into the game arrived eight minutes from time when Burke's failure to deal with a high ball in towards Carl McComb presented McKinney with an open goal, but his powerful shot was wonderfully blocked by the in-rushing McGuinness to secure both the clean sheet and full points.
