Davy McDaid registered another hat-trick as Cliftonville made comfortable progress to the Quarter Finals of the NI League Cup at Annagh United's expense this evening. Daniel Hughes set the Cup holders on the way and netted again following a McDaid double to make it 4-0 at the interval and, after completing his treble, McDaid would go on to tee Stephen Garrett up before missing from the penalty spot. The Reds made seven changes from the line-up that started the weekend's Danske Bank Premiership victory over Carrick Rangers and created a number of early openings before making the breakthrough when Chris Curran's free-kick delivery was nodded down by Caoimhin Bonner and Hughes pounced to powerfully drill past home goalkeeper Eoin Hughes. Hughes was unfortunate to concede a second when, after reacting superbly to repel a fiercely deflected Hughes strike, he was helpess to prevent McDaid following up to finish from close range. The keeper's foul on McDaid saw Cliftonville's number 9 convert from the penalty spot, with Hughes again finding the bottom corner to make it 4-0 after some smart build-up play from Curran. McDaid completed his hat-trick with a pinpoint blast from range early in the second period and, after picking our Garrett for the sixth, was presented with an opportunity to extend his own personal tally when a foul on Jay Donnelly earned another spot-kick, only for Hughes to make the save. McDaid, Donnelly and Curran all had chances to add to the scoreline as the clock ticked down, while keeper Peter Burke made a fine fingertip stop to preserve his second successive clean sheet as Annagh went in search of a late consolation.
