Giller touch

Caitlin Magill rattled in a hat-trick as Cliftonville Under 15 Girls overcame Carnoney 6-1 at Aquinas on Friday night.

Katie Markey, Sophie Gilliland and Aoibhinn Deery were also in target as the Reds bounced back from their defeat to Sion Swifts a fortnight ago – an occasion which saw many of our players contest their first ever 11aSide fixture.

With outfield player Anna Gibson deputising for injured goalkeeper Rachel Norney, Cliftonville took a 25th minute lead when Markey broke through on goal and confidently slotted home.

Debutante Gilliland, who only joined the Club this week, then made it 2-0 before Magill opened her account with the third before half-time.

Carnmoney came out all guns blazing after the break and reduced the arrears within a minute, but conceding a goal only served to spark the Reds back into life and, after narrowly missing some good chances as well as hitting the crossbar, the three-goal advantage was restored when Deery buried the ball into the back of the net after Erin Montgomery’s shot had been blocked.

The relentless Reds added a fifth from Magill, who then completed her treble with a superb free-kick from outside the box.

Though Cliftonville Under 13 Girls’ fixture with Ballymena United was postponed, our Under 11s and Under 9s gave typically positive accounts of themselves during their respective encounters with Carryduff and Rosario.
