Show stoppers

Cliftonville travel to The Showgrounds for a vital League Cup Semi Final clash with Ballymena United tomorrow night – and we’re calling on the Red Army to turn out in their numbers.

The Reds, who won the trophy a record-breaking four times in a row between 2013-2016, saw their grip on the silverware broken when the Sky Blues lifted the League Cup last season and, as both sides vie for a return to the Final, it’s worth noting that Ballymena have won their last nine home games – and have not lost at Warden Street in 14 outings.

Meetings between the teams so far this season have been typically tight, with United securing a 1-0 success at The Showgrounds in September ahead of Cliftonville triumphing by the same scoreline at Solitude in November – while this month’s Danske Bank Premiership clash was delicately poised at 1-1 when Storm Eleanor forced its abandonment.

It goes without saying, then, that the Reds will require a big performance if they are to reach their fifth League Cup decider in six years but, backed by a passionate and vociferous travelling support, will make the journey confident they can overcome Ballymena’s impressive home form.

As Barry Gray asserted earlier in the season, “if you give our fans something to back and believe in, they’ll give you everything they’ve got in return” – and that’s the message the boss will be relaying to his team as players and supporters alike prepare for their respective roles in what promises to be another intriguing night of Cup action.
